The City of Philadelphia recently announced that on September 1, 2020 the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) began enforcing the Wage Equity Ordinance, which prohibits employers from asking job applicants for their salary histories or using salary history to set their wages. The goal of the Ordinance is to help close the wage gap for women and people of color. An FAQ for employers is available on PCHR’s website.

Three people eating at a table; two people are wearing masks.

Indoor dining is back in Philadelphia starting September 8, 2020. Most of Philadelphia’s guidelines and restrictions are consistent with statewide rules—all of which aim to keep people healthy while gradually and safely reopening.

The City looks forward to continuing to expand allowable operations for Philadelphia’s restaurant industry, as well as reopening additional indoor businesses.

    What diners need to know

Many residents are looking forward to returning to their favorite indoor restaurants, and it’s no wonder—Philly is a bona fide foodie town. While you’re enjoying your dining experience, restaurants workers and operators will be enforcing strict guidelines to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Here are some new guidelines and updates you should know:

    • A maximum of four people can be seated together inside. If you have more than four people in your party, you will be at separate tables that are at least six feet apart. Six people per table are allowed for outdoor dining.
    • You’ll see fewer people around you. Restaurants cannot allow more than 25 percent of their normal capacity.
    • You cannot sit at a bar. Alcohol can be served only for on-site consumption at your table when in the same transaction as your meal.
    • Servers must wear both masks and face shields for additional protection. Diners must wear masks when they aren’t seated at their table.
    • Restaurants will be installing sneeze guards or partitions in their kitchens and at cash registers, host stands, and food pickup areas, where maintaining physical distance of at least six feet is difficult.

Most importantly, if you don’t feel well, do not risk other people’s health—stay home!

Outdoor dining will continue under its current guidelines, including a maximum capacity of 50 people.

Restaurant owners and operators: View the full list of restrictions for restaurants and food trucks.

All counties need poll workers—it’s a great way to support and help your community.

Poll workers do the key work of ensuring people exercise their right to vote. They also help ensure the safety and security of our election process—something that is critical to our nation’s democracy. Poll workers check in voters at polling places and set them up at the voting machines.

This year is a presidential election and voter turnout is expected to be high, so consider becoming a poll worker and spread the word to your friends and family who may be interested as well.

Help champion democracy—become a poll worker today.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.

Voting is one of the most important things U.S. citizens can do. Our city benefits when everyone makes their voice heard.

Whether voters choose to vote by mail or at the polls, all voting options are safe, legitimate, and secure.

This post below will cover how Philadelphians can:

    • Apply to vote by mail-in or absentee ballot
    • Turn in a mail-in ballot
    • Vote at the polls

Remember, it is recommended that if you are sending any applications or ballots through the mail, make sure to mail them EARLY.

    • October 19 is the deadline to register to vote in Pennsylvania.
    • October 27 at 5 p.m. is the last day for your county office to receive mail-in and absentee ballot applications
    • November 3 is the day of the General Election. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. As long as you are in line by 8 p.m., you will be able to vote. Voted mail-in and absentee ballots must also be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

If you have any other questions, the Philadelphia City Commissioner’s website provides useful information for voters regarding upcoming elections. You can also visit VotesPA for any statewide updates and general information about voting in Pennsylvania.
