Hosts for Hospitals is a wonderful organization that matches families needing to be in the Philadelphia area for medical treatment with local folks who can accommodate them in their homes so they don't have to incur major hotel expenses in addition to their medical expenses.  We have participated in this program for many years--unfortunately that's on hold with the pandemic, but there may be people with rental apartments in their home or in another property they own that are currently not occupied.

Trees lower urban air temperatures. Asphalt and concrete streets and parking lots increase urban temperatures and increase energy costs. Neighbors in a properly tree-shaded area pay reduced energy bills. It’s time to apply for a street tree! The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society plants free street trees twice a year and the deadline for the spring planting is at the end of November.

The Mayor’s Commission on African-American Males (MCAAM) expresses its deepest and sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Walter Wallace, Jr.

MCAAM also reiterates the family’s wishes that protests held in his name be conducted non-violently and focus on healing and uplifting Mr. Wallace’s community. MCAAM stands in solidarity with those who are raising their voices for the local businesses that have suffered damage and loss as a result of the protests and strongly denounces the destruction and looting that occurred.

MCAAM is heartbroken by Mr. Wallace’s killing and is dismayed to issue yet another statement regarding police brutality.  The tragic police shooting of Walter Wallace, Jr. on October 26 is yet another example of the disregard for the humanity of Black people being practiced by police officers who are sworn to protect and serve all of us.  Mr. Wallace’s shooting and subsequent death was avoidable and shines a light on how Black neighborhoods consistently suffer at the hand of the police and the justice system.

Read the full statement below to learn about what immediate steps need to be taken to avoid tragedies like this from happening again.

MCAAM Statement on the Killing of Walter Wallace, Jr.

"Last week, the eyes of the nation—and the world—were on Philadelphia, and I am proud to say that Philadelphia showed up.   Our residents turned out large numbers. They mailed in ballots amidst unprecedented conditions during a global pandemic. They stood in line with neighbors to cast their vote in person, and they have exhibited tremendous patience as they continue to wait for our election staff to count every vote.

I want to personally thank City Commissioners Lisa Deeley, Al Schmidt and Omar Sabir, who oversaw Tuesday’s election and continue to lead this impressive counting operation. I thank their hard-working staff, and hope they all can get some rest soon.  I also want to thank the employees from many City Departments which helped stand up and staff this operation.

There are hundreds of others -- including many City employees -- who helped on Election Day and by staffing this ballot counting operation for all the world to see.   You are all too numerous to name, but please know that you have my thanks.

Most of all I thank the people of Philadelphia.

Earlier last week, Commissioner Deeley and I sent out an open letter to voters, urging patience and calm on Election Day, and in the days that followed. You have shown it in spades.  We asked that you stay calm and stay above the fray - and you did exactly that.

As we predicted, the voters and residents of Philadelphia ensured that our city shined as an example of how to run an election right.

So in the days ahead, please remember: this is not just about a victory for a single candidate. Or a single political party.  This is truly a victory for our democracy.

The votes will continue to be counted, until every single mail-in ballot, absentee ballot, and provisional ballot is counted.

    The people have spoken."
    -Mayor James Kenney

The City Commissioners will continue to update their results site until they have completed counting all eligible votes, and, as in every election, results will be officially certified 20 days after the election.

Every year, [Philly] recognize National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week right before Thanksgiving. The timing is intentional. As many safely gather with families, we take time to consider what they are thankful for and inevitably think about those who are less fortunate. In Philadelphia, about 16.3% of your neighbors go to bed hungry or face food insecurity.

Mayor Kenney: Ron Donatucci was a true public servant. He found purpose in helping others and was always willing to go above and beyond for the residents of Philadelphia. He will be sorely missed, but his memory and legacy will continue on.
