The Eagles will kick off their 2021 preseason tonight against the Steelers.

This will be the first preseason game for Nick Sirianni and his new coaching staff and it will be the Eagles’ first preseason game since before the 2019 season. Last year’s preseason was wiped out by COVID-19.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Philadelphia and the rest of Pennsylvania have operated independently from one another. The city and state had separate timelines for easing COVID-19 restrictions; each collects its own data on coronavirus infections and vaccination rates; and now they have their own procedures to obtain replacement vaccination cards.

Philadelphia businesses must now require masks or proof of vaccination from employees and customers, while large outdoor events with no seating will also need to implement masks as the city updates its coronavirus guidance.

In addition, all city employees will need to be vaccinated by Sept. 1 or wear two face masks, Acting Health Commissioner, Dr. Cheryl Bettigole announced Wednesday. The new guidelines, which take effect at midnight, come as COVID-19 infections rise again across the country, driven largely by the more transmissible delta variant and a struggle to get people vaccinated.

Businesses that require all staff and customers be fully vaccinated will not be subject to the masking rule, Bettigole said.

Philadelphia was expected to announce an indoor mask mandate for all businesses — or allow them to go mask-free if they require proof of vaccination for employees and patrons. Gov. Tom Wolf announced Pennsylvania’s first vaccine mandate, ordering health-care workers at state-run facilities to be vaccinated or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and requiring future hires to be immunized.

A group of activists says the Schuylkill River is in such poor shape that future regattas may have to be moved. Philadelphia has a history of rowing that dates back to before the Civil War, but the activists say without something being done, the future could be in jeopardy.
